Thyroid Hormone Function

Thyroid Function Tests

Thyroid function tests are used to evaluate the function of the thyroid gland and measure the levels of thyroid hormones in the blood. The most common tests used to evaluate thyroid function are the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) test, the T4 test, and the T3 test.

The TSH test measures the level of TSH in the blood, which is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones. A high level of TSH in the blood may indicate hypothyroidism, while a low level of TSH may indicate hyperthyroidism.

The T3 test measures the level of T3 in the blood, which is the active form of thyroid hormone that is produced by the conversion of T4 in the body. Abnormal levels of T3 in the blood can indicate an imbalance in thyroid hormone production or a problem with the conversion of T4 to T3.
